Hygrometer has been specifically designed for use in very hot climates where the surface temperature of the substrate can exceed the paint manufacturer's recommended limits for successful painting.
Painting outside recommended limits can have a detrimental affect on the performance and lifetime of the coating.
Instead of using hygrometers conversion disks and charts there are gauges on the market, such as the Elcometer 308 & Elcometer 309, which will instantly take all the measurements and perform all the calculations.
The digital hygrometers are more accurate and reliable and allow users to take various and repetitive measurements to monitor the climatic conditions during a period of time. The Elcometer 308 Digital Hygrometer provides the surface temperature and relative humidity, whereas the Elcometer 309 Delta T Hygrometer measures Delta T - the difference between the surface temperature and the dewpoint temperature, and relative humidity.
Key features of the Hygrometer include:

For a long time, infrared thermal imaging detection technology has become an important means to ensure Industrial safety in developed countries. Theapplication field includes electric power, metallurgy, petro-chemistry, machinery, coal, traffic, fire control and national defense, etc. It can not only carries out real-time detection at high voltage, high current and high speed operation to perform real-time detection for production and
instrument but also need not power off the power supply, stop the machine or stop the production to find the potential problems and prevent occurrence of malfunction. The “non contact” modern detection technology
is safe, reliable and quick. It is a type of technical revolution compared with traditional contact detection method.
This product is an infrared camera that integrates surface temperature measurement and real-time thermal image. The traditional inferred thermometer needs to measure every component one by one while it is not necessary for infrared imaging camera, thus saving time. The potential problems may be displayed on color display screen clearly. Moreover, the central point measurement cursor is used to locate quickly and accurately to measure the temperature of the target object. In order to increase the differentiation, the product is provided with a visible light camera. The thermal images and visible images are stored in the device and can be read through USB or stored in a computer to generate a report or for print. With small volume, the product is easy to operate and has strong function. it is the ideal selection for electric power, electronic manufacturing, Industrial inspection and other fields.
The following major functions increase the product’s accuracy and usability:
. The radiation coefficient may be adjusted to increase the measurement accuracy of objects with half reflection surface.
. The highest temperature and lowest temperature cursor may guide the users to the areas with highest and lowest temperature of the thermal images.
. The selectable color palette.

Brand | Whirling Hygrometer |
Usage/Application | dew point and relative humidity (RH) |
Temperature Range | -5 deg C to 50 deg C |
Material | Glass |
Measuring Range | 23 deg F to 122 deg F |
Wicks | Cotton |
Dimension | 17 x 22mm |
Material filled | spirit filled thermometers |
The Elcometer 116A Whirling Hygrometer is designed to measure the ambient relative humidity from which the dewpoint temperature can be calculated. The Elcometer 116A Whirling Hygrometer is scaled in degrees Celsius. A simple Relative Humidity Guide is provided but more accurate results can be obtained using the Elcometer 114 Dewpoint Calculator.
USING WHIRLING HYGROMETER
1. Fill the reservoir with distilled water.
2. Check that the wick covers the bulb of the wet thermometer
fully and is saturated with water.
3. Hold the handle of the hygrometer and whirl it for 20 to 40
seconds.
4. Quickly read the wet thermometer and whirl the hygrometer
again.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until consecutive readings are the
same. Read the wet & dry thermometers.
6. Calculate the wet bulb depression, ie, the difference between
the dry and wet bulb temperatures.
7. Use the table to find Relative Humidity (%RH).
Eg. Temperatures, dry 20°C, wet 15°C;
Depression (20-15) = 5°C; Relative Humidity: 59%
(See value at intersection of dry bulb column and depression row)
To calculate Dewpoint:
On the bulb scale, use the wet bulb reading and move down the column to the Relative Humidity which
is closest to the calculated value, read depression. So if RH is 58%, depression is 4.5°C;
Dewpoint = wet bulb - depression = 15 - 4.5 = 10.5°C.
ACCURATE USE
To achieve an accurate measurement of wet bulb temperature :
• Keep the wick clean, tight fitting, fully over the thermometer bulb and saturated with distilled water.
• Evaporate the maximum amount of water from the wet bulb by whirling the hygrometer faster than 180rev/min.
• Minimise the effect of your body by holding the hygrometer in front of you, facing the wind. On a still day walk forwards while whirling.
• Reduce environmental effects by not whirling in direct sunlight or near heat sources.
• Read the wet bulb temperature as soon as whirling has stopped and do not touch the thermometer while taking readings.
• Only use values when consecutive readings are the same. Incorrect use of the hygrometer will result in the wet bulb temperature, and consequently %RH and dewpoint, being too high. For greater calculation accuracy, use the Elcometer 114 Dewpoint calculator or psychrometric tables.

Additional Information:
Delta T (TΔ) is the difference between the surface temperature (Ts) and the dewpoint temperature (Td). When TΔ is less than 3ºC (5ºF) painting should not occur.
Relative Humidity (RH)- expressed as a percentage, RH is the ratio of the amount of water vapour actually held by the air compared to the maximum amount of water vapour the air could hold at a given temperature. Typical maximum RH values specified by paint manufacturers are between 75% and 85%.
Delta T Hygrometer key features include:

The thin pins allow easy measurement of the moisture content of sawn timber/Wood, chipboard and fibreboard materials up to a maximum thickness of 25mm (0.98”) as well as normal gypsum and mixed plaster.
Types of Moisture Meters
On porous materials such as concrete, plaster, brick, wood, the moisture content of the substrate should be measured, as the presence of moisture within a material will result in poor adhesion, premature coating failure and poor appearance.
It is not sufficient to simply ensure that the surface is dry as often the surface of the substrate is the driest point – due to evaporation. It is important to establish the moisture content within the substrate itself.
When powder coating wooden panels, for example, if the wood (or mdf) has too high a moisture content, as the panel passes through the oven, the moisture is heated, generating steam – causing significant coating finish issues.
Applying a coating to a concrete floor which is too damp can cause premature adhesion failure. Moisture meters have been developed to specifically determine the level of moisture in a substrate and come in two forms:
Pin-type moisture meters:
Invasive pins are pushed firmly into the surface of the substrate being measured and by measuring the electrical resistance between the pin electrodes provide the percentage moisture content (%MC) in the substrate.

Pinless, contact-type moisture meters: Whilst pinless meters typically measure moisture content faster and are non-destructive they do require a relatively flat surface because the sensors are mounted on the base of the gauge making them ideal for concrete.Dry (green); 70 - 169
