Elcometer 3086 Motorised Pencil Hardness Tester provides a rapid method for determination of the comparative scratch resistance and hardness of a coating.
This test is known as the Wolff-Wilborn method and is fully described in BS 3900 - E19, ISO 15184 and ASTM D 3363 - 92a. A coated panel is placed on a firm horizontal surface and the pencil lead is held firmly against the coating, point way from the operator, at a 45° angle. The Pencil Hardness Tester travels across the coating sample. The hardness of the pencil lead is increased until one or both of the following defects mark the coating:
1. Plastic deformation; a permanent indentation in the paint surface without cohesive fracture.
2. Cohesive fracture; the presence of a visible scratch or rupture in the surface of the paint film, material having been removed from the paint film. (Above definitions are taken from ISO 15184.)
Note: For the ASTM method D 3363, the test is started using the hardest pencil
lead and continued down the scale of hardness to determine the two end points:
1. The pencil lead that will not cut or gouge the coating.
2. The pencil lead that will not scratch the coating.
The Elcometer 3086 is motor driven; this helps to eliminate any variation in test results which may occur due to operator technique. Your Pencil Hardness Tester uses standard black leads, and is supplied with 14 grades of lead, covering 6H (very hard) to 6B (very soft).

Anchor testing, known colloquially as ‘pull testing’, is the process whereby an anchor/fixing is pulled testing of anchors may be done either before or after the installation depending on the type of testing required.
It involves attaching a hydraulic pull tester to an anchor and pulling it to a designated test load, continuing to turn the handle and increasing the load until failure. A further calculation is carried out to work out the new recommended load. The anchor should also be tested five times and the average recorded. It’s considered ‘destructive’ as it is tested to the point of failure.

We are engaged in providing the broad assortment of “Hardness and Scratch” testing instruments.
Improved mechanical resistance is part of many quality requirements. One important criteria for assessing this feature is hardness. Depending on the requirements there are various methods for testing hardness. Some are dedicated to characterize coatings and others are more suitable for testing bulk materials such as metals, plastics, rubber or elastomers.
There are 2 popular methods of Hardness & scratch measurement depend different properties of material.
01) Resistance to Scratch and Wear Method:
r various options to assess “Coating’s resistance to scratch”
02) Resistance to Indentation Method:
various options to assess “Resistance to penetration”. For coatings in particular, there are three common methods where the depth of penetration of a weighted tool is used to show the coating’s resistance to penetration:
The “Clemen Unit” is a robust and simple-to-use instrument for evaluation of the resistance to scratching of a coated surface. The sample can be metal, wood, glass, plastic or other hard materials. It is available in two versions; the original Manual Clemen Unit and the Motorised Clemen Unit.
• Manual Clemen Unit :
The sample is clamped to a sliding platform which is moved manually.
• Motorised Clemen Unit :
The sample is clamped to a fixed platform. At the press of a button, the tool is moved across the sample and stops automatically at the end of its travel. Contact between the tool and a metallic sample is indicated by a lamp and voltmeter.
"Manual Clemen Unit" designed to evaluate resistance to scratching, a tool is fitted with an hemispherical end of 1mm (0.04”) diameter (standard), lowered gradually on to the surface of the sample and moved 60mm (2.36”). The sample width must be approximately 75mm (2.95 ).
Depending on the load applied, varying degrees of penetration of the tool into the coating are observed, from a superficial trace to total destruction. As the sample is pulled by hand, the tool lowers on to the sample, moves along it and gently rises up.

Depending on the requirements, there are various methods for testing hardness. Scratch Resistance is to assess a coating’s resistance to scratch.
Coatings and paints can protect, decorate substrate or conceal the defects of substrate, and these three functions are related with coatings hardness. And hardness is the important performance for paint mechanical strength, as well as the important indicator to judge paint quality. One of important indicators to evaluate coatings hardness is scratch resistance.
Automatic scratch test principle is to put a single or composite metal test plate fixed on the instrument work platform, when testing, working plat pull test plate at a rate of 30 to 40 mm/s to move slowly, at the same time, loading a load of hemispherical scriber slowly move reverse lines in the coating surface, if the scriber cuts coating, the scriber and test plate will show conductive between plates. The results are evaluated at a certain load whether the needle cuts through coating or a needle does not cut through of maximum load. This test has been found to be useful in comparing the scratch resistance of different coatings. It is most useful in providing relative ratings for a series of coated panels exhibiting significant differences in scratch resistance.

Push off adhesion test
A push off adhesion test measures the pressure required to push an area of coating away from the substrate. Push off adhesion testers are ideal for flat or curved surfaces and can test adhesion on both internal and external pipes.
Push off adhesion tester is hand-powered, portable and ideal for testing the coating adhesion on tanks, pipelines etc. For more accurate adhesion testing on curved areas, there is a wide range of curved dollies available, each designed for a specific range of curvature.
Adhesion tests can be made on flat or curved (concave and convex) surfaces.
Adhesion tester is the ideal gauge for testing coatings on tanks, pipelines, etc.
Digital Adhesion Tester features:
Adhesion tester can be used with convex and concave dollies, making this the gauge for adhesion of coatings on all pipelines including those with small diameter, tanks and other curved surfaces. There is a wide range of curved dollies available, each designed for a specific range of curvature.
Hydraulic Adhesion Tester is used to measure the adhesion between a coating and its substrate. During the application of a coating, there are many variables that affect the final finish and performance. These include surface preparation, cleanliness and contamination, the coating system, the compatibility of the different coating layers and the climatic conditions during the process. There are two versionss: one is fitted with a dial pressure gauge and the other is fitted with a digital pressure gauge. The tester is a reliable and simple gauge which measures the pressure required to push an area of coating away from the substrate. The surface under examination is prepared and then a test dolly is attached by adhesive. A pin on the tester fits into the centre of the dolly.
The operator turns the instrument handle to increase the hydraulic pressure on the pin. The pin is forced into the substrate and pushes the dolly away from the coated surface. When the stress exceeds the adhesion of the coating, the dolly and coating detach from the substrate. The R 3 en maximum value of hydraulic pressure during the test is recorded and is equivalent to the adhesion of the coating to the substrate
Concave and convex dollies designed to meet specific curvatures are available upon request.
Operation of the gauge is a straightforward three-stage process:
1. Adhere dolly to coating
2. Attach gauge to dolly
3. Apply pressure and record result
STANDARDS:
ASTM D 4541, ISO 16276-1, NF T30-606
The design of adhesion testers ensures that a uniform force can be easily applied throughout the range by smoothly rotating the gauge's crank handle, ensuring repeatable adhesion results to an accuracy of ±1%.
Adhesion tester's quick connect coupling allows the simple attachment of 14.2mm, 20mm or 50mm diameter dollies which, together with a wide range of accessories, allows coating adhesion testing on flat, curved, thick and thin substrates - including metal, wood, concrete and other fibrous materials.
Test head (actuator) has been designed to be small, ergonomic and lightweight – ideal for single handed testing of coating adhesion even in awkward or confined spaces.
Safe adhesion testing on vertical surfaces has also been considered. Using the magnetic clamp accessory the actuator is held securely - preventing accidental damage to the surrounding areas.Description |

The rolling-ball tack test is fast, easy to run, and requires little investment in equipment and little operator training. This test is intended primarily for quality control use since it demonstrates good reproducibility within a single laboratory and ability to detect batch-to-batch variations accurately if adhesive film thickness is held constant. Rolling ball tack is not intended as an investigative tool since for most pressure sensitive adhesive applications rolling ball tack results do not correlate well with application tack requirements.

As an Authorized dealer we are engaged in providing the broad assortment of Hardness Testing equipment. Many surface coatings are subject to the risk of damage by impact. Impact testers allow reproducible conditions of impact to be defined.
The DuPont Impact Tester has been designed to test the impact endurance of coated material, when impacted by a falling weight at specified points. The purpose of the test is to see if test specimens can resist the effect of rapid impact testing.
The principle of the test is that a coated test specimen is impacted by a falling weight, at a fixed height; thus checking the damage or deformation of the test specimen.
Impacting test for painting and coating materials is to use an impacting head with various round angles to touch the specimen in the beginning, and then a selected weight free dropping from a certain height to hit the impacting head to impact the specimen. Running the same way to test three more specimens, and put and leave them for an hour, and then watch if there is crack on the painting.
The DuPont Impact Tester can also be used on paintings with coated materials. The same procedure is followed, using various impact heads or needles to drop freely onto the test specimen from a certain height. This is performed three times on the same test specimen, which is then left to stand for one hour. The test specimen is then checked for any cracking on the painting.

The Dupont Impact Tester sandwiches a painted steel plate, plastics sheet, or other test piece between a spherical punch having a tip with a specified radius and a stand having a concave with the same dimensions as the tip of the punch, drops a weight onto the punch from a specified height, thus making it collide, be observed visually the conditions of the test piece and how much it is destroyed, and evaluates the impact resistance.

Adhesion testing after the coating process will quantify the strength of the bond between substrate and coating, or between different coating layers or the cohesive strength of some substrates. Routine testing is used as part of inspection and maintenance procedures to help detect potential coating failures.
When selecting an adhesion gauge, it is important to use the same inspection test methods throughout the inspection to ensure accurate comparisons.
Pull Off Adhesion: simple to use, quantitative range giving a definitive adhesion value, ideal for the laboratory or field on flat or curved substrate applications. Tensile Dollies (or stubs) are glued to the coating and, when the adhesive has cured, the force required to pull the coating off the surface is measured.
Automatic Pull-Off Adhesion Gauge accurately measures the adhesion strength of coatings on a wide range of substrates.

There are testing methods relating to the ‘abrasion by friction’ concept. Others are based on the projection of abrasive particles on to the test specimen. These techniques provide valuable information about materials and processes.
The three tests available are:
Although it is difficult to correlate test performance with real life wear conditions, mechanical tests can make an accurate comparison.
Used primarily in the testing of ceramics, plastics, textiles, metals, leather, rubber and painted, lacquered and electroplated surfaces, accelerated wear test procedures have also been written into many test specifications including ASTM, ISO, TAPPI and DIN - as well as automotive manufacturing procedures around the world.
Choose from a wide variety of abrading wheels and abraser accessories to simulate real-life wear conditions.

Elcometer manufacture and supply a wide range of instrumentation designed for the hardness tests most frequently used in the industry – these include pendulum, scratching, indentation or rebound measuring methods.
There are 2 popular methods of Hardness & scratch measurement depend different properties of material.
01) Resistance to Scratch and Wear Method:
We offer various options to assess “Coating’s resistance to scratch”
02) Resistance to Indentation Method:
We offer various options to assess “Resistance to penetration”.
Motorized Clemen Unit
The motor brings the tool gently in contact with the sample, whatever the load, variable from 0 to 5000g (176.4oz), moves across the coating and then gently lifts it with the automatic Start/Stop function.
The contact of the tool with the metallic substrate is indicated by a lamp and voltmeter. This unit has a significant benefit over the manual version as more repeatable and reproducible results can be obtained due to the uniformity of both speed and movement.
