Coating thickness gauge probes are fully interchangeable and are available in a number of designs and scale ranges to meet your standards.

All probes have a maximum operating temperature of 80°C (176°F) with the exception of separate ferrous probes 150°C (300°F) and Hi-Temperature PINIP’s 250°C (480°F). The stated temperature is the substrate temperature, and the duty cycle of the probe must be reduced to ensure a minimal temperature build-up within the probe.

Payne Permeability Cups are made entirely from anodised aluminium and are used to determine the permeability of films of paints, varnish, plastic, cellophane, etc.

The water evaporates or is absorbed and, after a certain time, the weight change relative to the film thickness is calculated, indicating the degree of permeability or permeance.

 

Product Details:

SaltSmart™ Salt Contamination System determines the amount of soluble salts present in a test sample. Using both the Elcometer SaltSmart™ Test Strips and the SaltSmart™ Contamination Meter, this system offers a fast, easy-to-use alternative to the Bresle Test and has been proven to be equivalent to ISO 8502-9.

A de-ionised water bottle is attached to the end of the SaltSmart™ Test Strip which is then fixed to the substrate using non-residue tape.  The test strip is positioned at a 10° angle to allow the water to flow on to the foam sensor which is in contact with the substrate.

After approximately 8 minutes the test strip is removed and the amount of soluble salts present is measured using the Elcometer 146 SaltSmart™ Contamination Meter, which displays and stores results in µS/cm, ug/cm² or mg/m².

Pfund Cryptometer offers a simple and accurate method to test wet film hiding power or determine thickness needed for complete opacity, It can gives estimate of coverage in square meters per liter and very be suitable for use with coatings containing pigments.
Pfund Cryptometer consists of a glass plate, half black half white as the base. Each half of this base has a scale engraved from 0-50mm along one edge starting from the division in the center. Two glass top plates are included with each instrument and these have two metal supports at one end so that these transparent top plates rest at an angle when placed upon the black and white area of the base plate.
The top plates differ in the length of their tiny supports so that different angles are formed between the top plates and the base plate. A wedge angle constant???K???is given to each top plate. These range from the smallest angle K=0.002 to K= 0.0035, K= 0.004, K= 0.007 and the largest K=0 .008, the popular constants being K=0.004 and K=0.008.
How to Use your Cryptometer ?
The appropriate top plate for the paint to be tested is selected, usually K=.008 for light coloured paints and K= .004 for dark coloured paints. (Alternatively, K= 0.002 for higher opacity coatings and K= 0.007 for less opaque coatings). A blob of paint, typically 3-5 ml is placed in the center of the base plate close to the black/white division. For light colours, the top plate (e.g. K= .008) is placed over the paint with the supports on the white area of the tile. The top plate is pressed down firmly so that the paint is spread without air bubbles to form a shallow wedge between the plates. This wedge will move with the top plate, the position of which is adjusted until the moment that the black/white division disappears. The scale reading is then noted from the black scale where the edge of the top plate makes contact with the base plate. When testing a dark coloured paint the top plate (e.g. K= .004) is used and the scale reading taken on the white area.
The thickness of paint in millimeters over the black and white division is obtained by multiplying the scale reading times the wedge constant K of the top plate used. This figure records the minimum film thickness necessary to obscure the black and white. The coverage or spreading power for this thickness can be obtained directly from the conversion tables below for each of the top plates.

Flash Point is defined as "the lowest temperature of a liquid at which its vapors will form a combustible mixture with air". It is a convenient and reliable classification of the "flammability" of many substances.

Flash point measurement can be determined using different flash point test methods, including:

• Open cup flash point tests - simulate an un-contained condition, for example a spillage.

• Closed cup flash point tests - simulate an enclosed environment, for example storage in a tank or sealed container and are usually specified due to improved precision.

• Testing flammable & combustible substances for Flash Point - the "flammability" of a material determines its safety classification and the regulations under which it must be handled, stored and transported. As not all mixtures containing solvents are highly flammable, an accurate and rapid Flash Point test is vital in reporting a material’s "flammability" classification and may assist to save costs and reduce giveaway.

Chloride Test Strips

Chloride ions on a steel surface increase the probability that corrosion of the steel will take place even if a protective coating is applied. Chloride ions trapped under a coating in the presence of steel and moisture will form a corrosion cell. This corrosion process will result in premature failure of the protective coating and may cause blistering of coatings in immersion service.

The chloride test strips will indicate the concentration of chloride ions in the sample solution and if the area of sample collection and the volume of water is known the concentration can be measured in parts per million or micrograms per millilitre.

Iron Test Strips
Ferrous ions are an indicator of the corrosion of steel as they are formed when the iron oxidises as a result of a corrosion cell formed between the steel and oxygen in the presence of water. The ferrous ion test strips will also indicate the concentration of ferrous ions in a sample solution in the same way as the chloride strips.

pH Test Strips
These strips will determine if a solution or surface is acid or alkaline in nature. Acids form when certain gases are dissolved in water, for example chlorine in water produces hydrochloric acid, carbon dioxide in water produces carbonic acid, sulphur dioxide in water produces sulphuric acid all of which are corrosive to steel.

The presence of these contaminants can either be detected in a solution washed from the surface or by putting a wet ph Test Strip on to the dry surface. pH does not measure the concentration but it does indicate how acidic or alkaline the surface is.
